!Que puta es la guerra!

Asi termina uno de los ultimos dialogos de la novela que termine de leer anoche: Por quien doblan las campanas, del escritor norteamericano Ernest Hemingway.
Hemingway nacio en 1899 en Oak Park, que hoy es uno de los barrios perifericos de Chicago. El pasado mes de abril, aproveche la visita de una amiga para visitar con ella su casa natal. Como no habia leido nada de el me compre un par de libros. El viejo y el mar, que ya lei hace algun tiempo y este que ahora menciono.
Reconozco que literariamente, Hemingway no me ha impresionado demasiado. Aunque su estilo periodistico a la hora de narrar si que engancha. Las cavilaciones internas de cada personaje estan muy bien expresadas, y en ambos libros los pensamientos no pronunciados de sus personajes tienen bastante protagonismo.
Sin embargo es del que acabe de leer ayer del que quiero hablar. Ya que no trata de otra cosa que de la Guerra Civil Española, donde el premio Nobel fue corresponsal.
Robert Jordan es un americano, profesor de español en Montana que desembarca en España con la Brigada Lincoln para defender a la Republica. En el momento que comienza la narracion le es encargada una mision detras de las lineas fascistas, para la que necesitara contar con los guerrilleros que se hayan escondidos en las montañas. Alli conocera a Maria, una joven que fue rescatada por los guerrilleros de un peloton de fusilamiento y que desde entonces convive con ellos, y no tardara en enamorarse de ella.
Si algo me ha impresionado de la novela es la descripcion de las matanzas que se produjeron. Y en esto hay para todos los bandos. Para mi la guerra civil siempre habia sido una cosa que paso hace mucho tiempo y que le trajo muchas desgracias a mi familia y de la que era mejor no hablar mucho y en todo caso hablar como se habla de algo muy lejano. Las descripciones de los ataques, de los fusilamientos, o del dia que comienza la guerra en un pueblo republicano te presentan una imagen muy diferente: la brutalidad mas absoluta y la muerte con toda su crudeza.
Los dilemas morales que se presentan a los campesinos, obligados a echarse al monte con el fusil para evitar una muerte segura, te encogen el corazon. Habla Anselmo, quien es un viejo que no sabe leer, y que piensa en todo momento que matar tiene que ser malo. Y que si hubiera un Dios como antes de la Revolucion habria que pedirle 
perdon, pero como ya no hay dios… quien va a perdonar toda esta muerte?. Y habla Agustin, que en una mision haciendo de enlace a traves de las lineas, ve surgir una perdiz de entre unos arboles y piensa que si no hubiera guerra marcaria el arbol para, a su vuelta, coger las crias de la perdiz, domesticarlas y utilizarlas como señuelo cuando sean mayores cuando va de caza, que es lo que mas le gusta hacer cuando no tiene que trabajar en la tierra. Pero esta la puta guerra, y todas esas pequeñas cosas que tan felices les hacian antes de que empezara se han ido al carajo.
Es muy interesante ver como un extranjero percibe a los españoles y que cosas le llaman mas la atencion. Como la hospitalidad sin limites que ofrecen a gente que casi ni conocen. Como la dificultad que tiene el pais para elegir lideres que les gobiernen justamente. Ese es el cancer de este pais desde siempre. Ya desde el “!Que buen vasallo si hubiera buen señor!” del Cantar del mio Cid, los reyes del Siglo de Oro, la propia guerra civil, y los procesos de promocion en las empresas de nuestros dias.
Ojala no tengamos nosotros que vivir nunca una guerra. Pero conociendo a cada uno de los personajes de Hemingway no he podido evitar pensar en cual de ellos seria yo de verme envuelto en la contienda. Muy recomendable.

We should implement this everywhere. The only thing shocking is that people are more shocked when the good guy succesfully defend themselves than when the bad guys choose to rob.
KARACHI: In a shocking incident of vigilante justice, a mob in Karachi on Wednesday burnt three bandits alive near the Timber Market, venting their anger and disgust over the rising crimes.
The gory incident took place when four robbers barged into Akbar Soomro’s apartment on the third floor in the Somiya Mukarram Palace, situated near the Timber Market. The robbers barged into his house at around 1:30 pm and held the children hostage at gunpoint. They cut the telephone line and electricity wires and locked the house from inside and started misbehaving with the women.
The bandits looted cash and jewellery. When they were about to flee, the door bell rang. When the bandits opened the door, they found Akbar, the head of the family. They shot and injured him and started fleeing.
Akbar, a seaman by profession, chased the bandits and made a hue and cry. The passers-by and residents of the area caught the three bandits and started beating them, while the fourth escaped. They immediately shifted Akbar to a hospital where he was declared out of danger.
In the meantime, 800 to 1,000 people gathered at the scene and started beating the robbers with fists, blows and sticks. Some people brought kerosene and petrol and sprinkled it over the bandits and the mob torched them. Some people resorted to aerial firing and also shot and injured the bandits before they were killed.
A large contingent of police tried to rescue the bandits but the public resisted and pushed the police back. Edhi workers who tried to save the bandits who were aflame were also beaten by the public. After a tough struggle of 20 minutes, the police managed to shift one injured bandit to hospital, while two bandits who were completely burnt died on the spot. The third bandit died in the hospital after struggling for life for two hours.
The residents said they were happy over the incident and praised the persons who had torched these robbers alive. The robbers, they said, looted the area people and had been killing them for just a cell-phone or cash. They added due to this, they had instructed their children not to resist and surrender cell-phones to the robbers. They said what the people achieved was justice because had the bandits been arrested, they would have been granted bail by the courts and would have resumed looting.
According to the residents, bandits regularly robbed the passers-by on Nishtar Road late at night and deprived the poor vendors of their day’s earnings. Station House Officer, Eidgah, Nasir Mehmood, said the bandits were unidentified and their bodies were shifted to the morgue. He added that they had found two TT pistols from the bandits and jewellery and Rs 20,000 looted from Akbar’s house.
The SHO said two FIRs were lodged – one by Akbar Soomro and the other on behalf of the state under the Arms Ordinance for the pistols recovered from the bandits.
